Corruption - Leigh Lennon Page 0,64

I have other things to attend to, all pertaining to the safety of my girl.

“Mr. Danner isn’t available.” The sharp features of a woman I swear must be ninety stare daggers at me.

“He’ll be available for me. Tell him it’s Maddox Sobota.”

She hits her intercom but brings the phone to her ear. “Alright, sir. Got it.” Her hard features only deepen. “He said he won’t be seeing you today and to call his lawyer.” She swivels her chair around, grabbing something from her desk, maybe his lawyer’s business card, when I take the opportunity to push past her desk and toward the double doors.

“Mr. Sobota, you can’t go in there.” If she were to ask me if I care, I would have answered with a fuck no.

“Danner.” I slam his doors open as they bang the walls on either side. “I’m not leaving without a face-to-face, and I fucking swear if you know what’s best for you, you will surrender, sit your fucking ass down, and listen to what the fuck I have to say.”

His bitch of a secretary stands behind me, out of breath, and I’m left to wonder if she’ll pass out. “Mr. Danner, do I need to call security?”

“No, Lois, I’ll be okay. I’m sure whatever Mr. Sobota has to say will be quick and to the point. Please shut the door behind you. That will be all.” He walks over to his liquor cabinet. “Want a drink?” he asks.

“Nope, you son of a bitch, I’m not here for a fucking drink with you.” And the cocky asshole takes his time pouring his drink. I walk around his room, trying to find out as much about this fucker as I can get while he tries to ice me with the whole stalling tactic. The man likes to show off his shit. Pictures with athletes, actresses, even well-known politicians. I can tell in one sweep through that he has to have his self-worth right in front of his nose to prove to others he’s so important. What a psychotic asshole.

“So, Mr. Sobota, what is it I can do for you?” He sits back in his chair, holding a whiskey in his hand at nine a.m. in the morning.

I take a seat across from his desk. “What do you want, asshole?” It’s a simple question, and I know what his simple answer will be.

“I want Jewel. I’ve wanted her from the beginning.”

I let out a long laugh, and he laughs with me when I prop my elbows on his desk, leaning forward. “Well, we’re at an impasse because she’s made her choice. And her choice is me. So there’s that.”

“Yeah, but soon, she’ll see you for the asshole you are. You’ll dig your own grave, and I’ll be there to pick up the pieces.” He’s trying to unnerve me. I won’t get unnerved. I’ll plan a couple of steps ahead.

“Well, that’s not going to happen, motherfucker, so what is it you’re hoping to accomplish from this?”

He rubs his hands together in front of his face like every Disney villain I’ve seen in the movies I’ve watched with my niece, Rain.

“I guess we’ll see. Let the best man win, and until then, I’ll be seeing you around.”

At this point, I don’t show anymore emotion. I push to my feet and lean down as far as I can get, and in the most neutral tone, I warn, “You stay the fuck away from Jewel.”

I’m at the door, and his words pull me back into the conversation. “By the way, I’m so sorry to have heard about the mess that someone made of your home.” He has a large grin on his face.

I stay staring at him. “You keep up shit like that, Danner, and you’ll be the one digging your own grave.” This shuts him up, and I leave him to his psychotic ways.

The house is down in a little ravine, not far from Tori’s house. And though I’ve never been here before, it screams to me of a house where Jewel was raised. It’s a pretty little home but looks can be deceiving, so I’m not misled after seeing her the night her dad slapped her.

My Camaro pulls to a stop near the stairs leading to the heart of the home. When my precious gem talks about spending time in the kitchen with her mother, I see the joy on her face. And by the way my girl is fattening me up, she and her mother spent a lot of
