slipped out of Layla. She turned around, wrapped her arms around me, and tried to kiss me on the lips. I moved my head to the side, and she pressed a kiss on my jaw.
“You should go,” I whispered.
She cocked an eyebrow at me, huffed, then shook her head and went to grab her clothes. She unlocked the door, and as she stepped over the threshold, she shot Isabel an annoyed look.
“I hope you’re happy, human. You killed one of our Alphas, and now you’re after the other three. You will ruin our pack.”
Isabel only sobbed harder. Layla slammed the door behind her, and the harsh, unforgiving sound snapped me out of a trance I hadn’t known I’d fallen into. I felt sick to my stomach. Ignoring Isabel and her pathetic sobs, I went to the kitchen counter, got a cold beer, and stepped outside. It had gotten dark, and the sky was filled with stars. A few minutes later, Isabel joined me.
“Why?”
I shrugged and sipped my beer.
“Jax, that was the most horrible thing anyone has ever done to me.”
My heart clenched. I was naked, and for the first time, I noticed I could feel the cold seep into my bones. But that was stupid. I was a werewolf. We were never cold.
“Please say something.”
“You want me to say something?” I spat angrily. “Fine! I don’t need you, Isabel. And neither do Reid or Thorn. So how about you fuck off?”
“What do you want me to do?”
“I don’t want you to do anything. I don’t care. Do whatever the fuck you want and leave me alone. Go!”
She didn’t move. I rolled my eyes, finished my beer, turned on my heels, and went back inside. Why did she have to be so slow? Maybe if I left her there, she’d eventually get the message.

After Jax left, there was nothing but emptiness and silence. I sat alone on the ground, in front of the cabin, unable to believe what had just happened. I’d known Jax wouldn’t enthusiastically embrace the idea of me belonging to the pack. From the very beginning, he’d said he didn’t want me here. But even so, I hadn’t expected him to treat me this way, to humiliate me like this.
The cries of ecstasy of that werewolf female still echoed in my mind. “Yes, yes, Jax! Harder! Fuck me!”
I covered my ears, wishing I could forget them, but already knowing it wouldn’t be so simple. Tears flowed down my cheeks, and I buried my face in my palms. I was so stupid. Why had I thought things could be different? Mama Rose might have claimed I was their mate, that I had the heart of a wolf or whatever. But even so, from the moment I’d set foot here, the brothers had made it clear that they hated me. They might want me sexually, but that meant nothing when it came to a relationship. Maybe that was what Mama Rose had meant when she’d said that I had to leave my humanity behind. Maybe I was supposed to accept all this, too.
But no, I couldn’t do it. I could take the insults, the rough sex, even physical violence. But I refused to just sit here and waste away while the man who’d fucked me took his pleasure in another woman. If that meant I was too human to belong to the pack, so be it.
“Do what you want,” Jax had told me. Okay then. If he didn’t need me, if he thought I was just a useless human, I’d just leave and find another home.
It was easier said than done. The last time I’d tried to escape, the brothers had caught me pretty quickly. But Jax had left me alone this time, and there were no guards that I could see. Biting my lower lip, I decided to take my chances. I wasn’t exactly sure where we were, but I was familiar with the area around the werewolf village and the Black Diamond Lake. If I could make my way to a high point, I’d be able to see the lake, and from there, I could find a path to civilization.
With that tentative plan in mind, I went around the cabin and dashed into the forest. I expected someone to stop me at any moment, but nobody did. No one came after me. After a few minutes of jogging, it became obvious that there was no point in trying to run. Jax had been right. No one would miss
