Mother’s eyes cut over to him with dread. “Oh, Jorge. Please tell me you’re not still romping around with random whores out there in the woods.”
“That’s a great question,” I smiled at him. “What random women are you taking out there?”

The two of them were getting restless with their distrust of me, but as long as I kept my promise to Lucia and stayed away...it would all soon be a thing of the past.
But after dinner, once I was alone in my room again, I felt the ache for her return as I knew it would. I stared out my window at the distant smoke billowing up to the clouds, knowing it was from the fireplace of Lucia’s hacienda. I watched until it turned gray, then black, and finally cleared altogether. They would all be asleep by now. And even though I promised to stay away, and needed to stick to it before Jorge and Dario caught onto something more, I felt drawn to her. I wondered if she was laying in her bed, thinking of me. Maybe that’s why I felt so compelled to go. She was telepathically calling out for me, signaling for me to come.
The idea was absurd, but it didn’t stop me from putting on my boots and sneaking out of the house. I made the long walk to the edge of our property and crossed the boundary over to the Chavez land. I approached their house from the back and peaked in through the windows until I found the one that Lucia was resting behind. I watched for a moment, seeing her lay there in the darkness. The whites of her eyes glistened in the moonlight. She was still wide awake, though she probably didn’t want to be.
I wiggled the window just enough to see if it would give, and it did. It was unlocked. I knew I had to move quickly to catch Lucia in a moment where she just might give into her desires rather than jumping up to scream for someone to call the cops. I quickly and carefully slid the window open and climbed inside, planting myself into her bed before she could even figure out what was happening.
