troublesome thoughts plague your mind, my friends,” Harry says. “The Unmaker, the Equalizer, is here. Have faith in her. Go now and let your hard work ease your worries.”
Slowly, the crowd disperses. We move out of the way as fast as we can. Getting caught spying on them won’t help with their trust issues.
They’re almost at the top of the path where it diverges into the forest when Rosie comes down with hurried steps followed by Felicity and Renata.
“Has anyone seen Daisy?” she asks, loud enough that the church members overhear and stop in their tracks.
Son of a bitch. She had to go and open her big mouth in front of all these strangers. I know she’s young, but I’d expect a higher level of maturity from her considering the type of life she led.
“Have you never taught your sister common sense?” Phoenix whispers to Daisy. “Why is she asking about you in front of all these strangers?”
“She must be freaking out. Give her a break,” Daisy mutters, but I catch the edge in her voice. She’s also unhappy about Rosie’s outburst.
“She’s not in the bungalow resting?” Artex asks, arching both eyebrows.
“No. We woke up and she was gone,” she replies.
Toby joins the group, rubbing his sleepy eyes and sporting crazy bed hair. “What’s going on?”
“Daisy is missing.” Rosie crosses her arms.
“Oh, come on, Rosie. Seriously?” Daisy mutters under her breath.
“Let’s not jump to conclusions. I’m sure she isn’t missing,” Xavier replies.
“The guys aren’t in the bungalow either,” Toby declares. “They must be together. Maybe they went on an exploration trip.”
“In the middle of the nig—oh.” Rosie’s mouth rounds as understanding finally dawns on her.
“A little dense there, huh?” Phoenix quips, earning an elbow shove from Daisy.
The newcomers are still waiting at the top of the path, probably wondering if their help will be needed for locating Daisy.
“I think we need to come out of hiding before they form a search party,” I say.
“But if we show up out of thin air now, they’ll know we were spying on them,” Phoenix replies.
“Let’s return to the camp’s main cabin. We can always say we went in search of food,” Rufio suggests.
“Okay, let’s hurry, then.”
Even knowing that I’m going to piss him off royally, I pick up Rufio and throw him over my shoulder.
“Bryce,” he hisses. “What the hell!”
“Sorry, bro. You’re too slow.”
He shuts his pie hole, but only because making a bigger fuss would give our location away. We run at Idol speed, reaching the camp’s main building in a heartbeat. After making sure the coast is clear, Morpheus lifts the shadows that hid us.
I set Rufio back on his feet but step away quickly when I see the ill intentions flashing in his eyes. He wants to punch me.
“You’re an ass,” he grits out.
I open my mouth to reply when his blue eyes flash with an electric spark that I’ve always associated with the flaring up of his powers.
“What the fuck!” I blurt out.
Catching my tone, the others stare at my brother. “What is it?” Daisy asks.
Rufio’s eyes are normal again, and there’s no change in his aura. He’s still a Norm. Maybe I imagined the whole thing.
I shake my head. “Nothing. It was nothing.”
Phoenix veers toward the cabin, disappearing inside the building in the next second.
“Where are you going?” Morpheus asks.
“Since we’re here, might as well look for food. I’m starving.”
Daisy’s stomach grumbles, which results in her getting the cutest pink shade on her cheeks. “I could eat.”
Unable to resist, I sling my arm around her shoulder and kiss her on the temple. “Of course you could after that marathon.”
“Oh my God. Can we please not talk about it?”
“Why not? It was amazing,” I say.
“Well, I don’t know. I guess I need to get used to it.”
“You sure have to, babe,” Phoenix says from inside the cabin. “This will be the new normal.”
He didn’t waste any time and has already raided the cabin’s fridge and dumped everything edible on the counter. Sadly, it’s not much.
Morpheus inspects the loot with a frown. “I think going out for breakfast is in order.”
“We can’t leave. Your grandpa is still looking for us,” Rufio retorts.
Daisy takes a seat at the table, leaning her elbows on it and resting her chin on her linked hands.
“Are you tired, love?” I ask.
“A bit.”
I stand behind her and massage her shoulders, which are tense as fuck. “Tell me if I’m hurting you.”
“No. This is nice.”
“There’s enough ingredients here for one sandwich.” Phoenix looks at Daisy. “We’re out
