Bride of the Sea Monster - Eve Langlais Page 0,12

sea monster eyes as he demanded I become his bride, I could say no.

An inner thought met with the seeing chortling, Ha. Ha. Ha. You wish.

My lips pursed.

It would work. No matter the method, I’d gotten hitched. I was off the market. Free.

So free that I scurried back to my room and slammed the door shut. Then paced.

What to do next? Find my husband, or avoid him? Sleep with him and make a dying man happy or—

A pounding at the door had me freezing.

Could Ian have returned? I wasn’t ready to see him. Hadn’t made my decision yet.

Another knock. “Hello. I’m looking for Ms. Farseer,” stated a deep male voice that I didn’t recognize. So, I didn’t reply. People who came pounding and looking for me by name usually weren’t up to any good. It’s why I had a postal box. Easier to avoid stalkers and bill collectors.

A long silence stretched, but still, I didn’t move.

I could swear I heard a heavy sigh and then footsteps as the person left. Or did they just want me to think that?

I eyeballed the door as if I could see through it. While I didn’t see it opening in the next few hours, I didn’t want to take any chances.

Eyeballing the other exit to my room—a door that led to a winding balcony that serviced a few cabins—I changed into a bathing suit and grabbed a towel.

Perhaps hiding in my room was the wrong idea. He knew how to find me here. Maybe I should bury myself in a crowd instead. After all, I was on a cruise, and technically, my honeymoon. It was time I tried to have some fun.

Killian Kraken: I wish they wouldn’t scream. It makes me hungry.

The water soothed the beast, and I swam alongside the boat rather than at the surface. What was the point? I’d only be delaying the inevitable. A few hours on board before I was forced to go for another swim. Might as well save myself the bother.

What about my wife?

She’s not my wife.

A situation I might want to clarify. Had I truly done the unthinkable?

Rather than find out, I trailed alongside the cruise ship, using my long tentacles to pull me with ease. When the vessel dropped anchor, I sank down into the deep and ignored the milling mermaids who swarmed the warm waters, ready to greet the passengers. A few even stroked by me, their fingers trailing over my skin. Trilling a watery hello.

Happy. They seemed so fucking happy, and I could see why. The ocean in these parts was a veritable paradise. The blue so clear I could see the bright coral spiraling out, forming reefs where a wild assortment of fish darted.

Tasty fish, I should add. A kraken could get fat on a daily diet of this.

Down at the bottom, I also spotted a wrecked boat, something modern with a sleek hull and lines. A little too snug for an everyday den, but a good spot to hang out, basking in the filtered beams of daylight.

Not that there was much brightness. The clouds had followed us thus far. Their chilly gray couldn’t counter the warmth in the air, but they effectively hid the sun. I hoped we’d see some sunshine soon.

A glint caught my attention, something sinking into the water, being pushed around by the eddies and currents caused by the commotion of mermaids and swimming passengers. I reached out with a tentacle, so long it astonished me at times, and grasped the falling object then held it up, gauging its worth.

A locket that someone had dropped into the water. The pictures within were probably already ruined, yet something compelled me to return it. I projected my tentacle to the surface.

It exited the water, and through my suckers, I sensed more than saw the people gathered.

Most were impressed. “Look at the size of his appendage!”

Some were frightened. “Oh, no. I’m going to get eaten by a sea monster.”

Interesting idea. I’d only ever eaten fish before. And one lobster. The shell had gotten stuck coming out. Not a pleasant experience at all.

As I waggled my tentacle around, looking for whoever had lost the locket, I sensed someone familiar.

I didn’t need eyes to know who it was.

Sasha. A woman who may or may not be my wife. I didn’t know for sure. Feared finding out. More than likely, if we’d done something that stupid, she’d woken with regret. I wouldn’t hold it against her.

I waved.

Her fear hit me, and I shivered. Without
