Breakaway - Sadie Jacks Page 0,40

In so many ways she reminded me of our Charlie. Brave without meaning to be, honest to a fault, so kind it made my heart ache.

But there the resemblance ended. Charlie would have been the first to lead the fight against whatever it was that threatened her. She had grown up with the knowledge that she was the top of the heap, that she had more power in her little finger than almost all of humanity put together.

And let’s not forget the fact that I really want to get up close and sexually personal with Hollyn. That creepy thought never crossed my mind with Charlie. I shuddered. Eww.

“About the movie?” Hollyn asked. Her voice was a little smaller than before. Almost as if she were embarrassed or feeling vulnerable about something.

I nodded, jumped up. I grabbed the remote off my desk and hit the button that would open the wall paneling.

Hollyn was looking at the racks of computers and monitors on the far corner walls. “What are those?”

“Computers. Remember when I said I was doing some checking up on you?”

“While I was in the shower.” She smiled and nodded.

Tag growled, the storm in his voice getting ready to open up and pound down on me. “You what?”

Hollyn giggled. “See, I told you it sounded funny.” She raised her brows and looked at me.

“I was doing digital checking, bro. Ease back.” I patted the air. “Although she did say I could have joined her in the shower.” I wiggled my eyebrows.

Tag’s face flushed, the red moving up from his neckline to his cheeks. “You better fucking not.”

Hollyn’s brow furrowed. “Why not? I think it would conserve water. It’s not an infinite resource.”

My smile fell. She really had no idea what I was joking about.

Dumb ass, Tag berated me mentally.

“Why is he a dumb ass?” Hollyn asked.

“Damn it. How do we get the barrier thingy? Sometimes, we need to have private conversations,” Tag said, his voice snotty and rude.

Hollyn jerked back as if he’d slapped her the face. “I’m sorry. I’ll close my channels, so I don’t hear anyone. I’m sorry.” She closed her eyes, her face scrunched tight for a moment. After a minute, she opened her eyes. Shot Tag a wounded smile. “There. Now you can talk about me without me hearing it.”

Tag looked like he’d just been nut punched. His mouth worked, opening and closing without any sound coming out of it.

Happy now, dick? I glared at him. Fix it. Now.

Tag turned to Hollyn once more. “Sweetcheeks, I’m sorry. That didn’t come out the way I wanted it to.”

Hollyn smiled as she gazed over his right shoulder. “It’s okay. I know I’m annoying. I’ll try to be more careful in the future.” She turned back to face the projection screen that hung in place of a TV. Her eyes widened. “How does the TV work on a white sheet?”

I studied her for a moment, wondered if we should push her on this.

Tag took the reins…like usual. He grabbed her hand, prying her fingers from her opposite arm. “Look at me, please.” He waited.

She didn’t look at him. She studiously ignored him, gaze fastened on the screen like her life depended on it.

“I can wait much longer than you can, sweetcheeks. You don’t want to play the waiting game with me,” he warned.

One corner of her mouth twitched as a light of challenge entered her eyes as she continued to focus on the blank screen. “Start the movie, please, Toven.”

I snickered as I hit the buttons. The lights lowered and Harry, Hermione, and Ron appeared on screen. I slid back onto the bed, sandwiching Hollyn between me and my brother.

I grabbed her other hand and settled in for a dual marathon event: Harry Potter movies and the winner of the Waiting Game.

Damn, I’m glad she crashed into Thane.

Chapter 22 – Thane

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “What do you want, Ainsley? I told you, we’re done.”

She stared at me as if I were speaking a different language. Her wide mouth firmed into a thin line. One dark red eyebrow raised as she tapped her fingers on her crossed arms. “Why now? What’s happened that you need to do this now, Thane? We’ve come so far. We’re almost there.”

I gritted my teeth. Not that I hadn’t been aware of the fact that she was with me because we were the supposed ‘it’ couple of the ‘rich and sexy set,’—her words, not mine—but having it shoved in my face wasn’t really
