done nothing.

She was still trembling.

It perplexed me because I didn’t know if I should brace myself for her to go into shock or take my head off.

Either way, she was not happy with today’s turn of events and couldn’t say I blame her.

I peeled my shirt over my head and flung it to the laundry basket in between the dresser and the bathroom door, then began digging for another when a loud thump caught my attention.

I ran from my room. She wasn’t in the bedroom and when I saw the bathroom door was closed, my heart did a strange lurch.

Had she fallen over?

Was she in the tub? The water was running so that could be it. Rushing over, I knocked. “Tianna?” I called. “I heard a sound. Are you okay?”

But all I heard was her sobbing. Worried, I opened the door a crack. “Are you um…I’m coming in.”

When I did face her, she was fully clothed and standing under the shower. The water had soaked through her hair, pressing the strands to the sides of her head and down her face.

I climbed into the tub with her and framed her face with my palms. “Talk to me, Tianna. Tell me what’s going on in your mind.”

“I-I don’t know.” She stammered. “I don’t know. All I know is I want all of this to be over. I can’t stop shaking—it’s been over an hour and my body is still doing this mess!”

Tianna held her hand up to show me. “Can you believe this? What the hell kind of weakling—”

“Weak?” I tilted my head. “Tianna you climbed behind the wheel and got us out of there. Another woman would have freaked out. She would be screaming as the shots flew.”

“Don’t kid yourself—I did scream. You probably didn’t hear me.”

I smiled. “Okay, once. What I’m trying to say is you did good today.”

“I just wish I could stop shaking. How comes you aren’t a mess too?”

“Years of conditioning.” I told her. “Besides, you wouldn’t want a bodyguard who gets spooked easy, am I right?”

“You got a point there.”

Exhaling, I drew her into my chest, tangled the fingers of one hand in her wet hair and held her cheek to my shoulder. When she wrapped her arms around my body, she sighed and relaxed into me.

“It’s okay.” I kissed the side of her head.

“It won’t ever be okay again—not really,” she said. “Unless you have a time machine in your bedroom somewhere.”

I chuckled.

The asshole in me wanted to make a joke about what was in my bedroom, but I swallowed the joke. “We’re going to figure this out and then you can go home again.”

Years ago, I lost any sort of gentleness in me—at least I thought I had. It was eaten away by the war and the faces of dead strangers. But having her close and hurting did something to me. It brought back memories of a time when I was at least a little human.

“We should get you dried off.” My voice cracked as I reached around her to turn off the water.

“I actually want to get a shower.” She sniffled then sneezed.

“This time, maybe turn on the hot water?”

She grinned impishly. “Sorry. Was trying to fix a problem before the depression kicked in.”

I smirked. “A problem? Do I make you horny, baby?”

She smacked my arm. “Are you always this filthy?”

“Do you really wanna know?” I dropped my voice. “I always thought a question like that shouldn’t be answered with words. Actions speak way louder.”

Tianna trembled in my arms then pointed to the door. “Go.” She laughed. “I need to shower.”

Groaning, I climbed from the tub, grabbed a couple of the towels, and exited the bathroom. I dried the excess water from my jeans then peeled it off. After wrapping a towel around my hips, I turned to look at the closed door.

As I stared, I knew I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep ever again. I knew what her body felt like, pressing into mine as intimately as I could get without being slapped. Her curves pressed into me was the closest I’d been to heaven and I didn’t want to go back to reality.

I wanted to stay in that tub, cold water chilling me to the bone with her hot frame warming me like no fire could.

Yes, I’d wanted to kiss her. But what kind of man would that make me? She was in pain—kissing her would have been the absolute wrong thing to do in that moment.

Besides, the way
