of whatever fuckery he’d pulled this time.

By the time I managed to catch a cab home, my body was throbbing even more. The adrenaline was still pushing me to do things and I worried about how I would crash once the adrenaline wore off.

But that was future me’s problem.

The cops would catch up to me sooner or later. I needed to make sure I didn’t look as if my ass wasn’t just lit on fire.

I rushed into the house and found some aspirins in the bathroom. Though it said to take one, I popped two with an entire glass of water, then hurried through the bedroom, gathering a few things.

I couldn’t stay at my house. They’d already paid me one visit and blew up my vehicle. I doubt I’d survive another visit.

After packing a bag with a few necessities, I gathered my important papers, traveller’s cheques and the Springfield XDM from where I had it taped to the wall behind my headboard. I quickly checked the chamber, ensured the safety was on and shove it into my purse.

This time, I climbed behind the wheel of my BMW sedan and sped away from my house, checking over my shoulders repeatedly to ensure I was alone. My street was quiet, a cul-de-sac that backed up to a river.

The traffic wasn’t much.

I would have been able to see if someone was following.

But the silence, the lack of movement—all of it scared me.

Once I was checked into an out of the way motel, I did what I always did when I was in trouble. I reverted to Hank “Montana” Patterson—a man I was pretty sure was tired of seeing me, tired of hearing me, tired of even remembering that I existed.

I hadn’t been the best person to him in the past. But he was a good man and it killed me to always be depending on him the way I had in the last three years. But Joseph was an idiot and I kept falling for his little cons which usually left me crawling back to Montana for help.

As I dialed the number I now knew by heart, I wondered if this would be the one time he said no.

“Yes?” His voice crisp, cold, hard.

“We need to talk.” I managed.

“About what?”

“Joseph.”

“Meet me at the same place in an hour.” He hung up.

My heart broke.

I knew what I’d done to him. I knew he had the right to hate me, to leave me to whatever darkness I’d fallen into. I deserved that venom from him.

But I was a woman in danger and Montana had never been the kind of person to turn his back in that kind of situation. He was a gorgeous man with a heart of gold and a body of steel. I’d be an idiot to not have a small part of me still wanting him. That same part of me ached for a soft word from him—no matter how tiny.

Yes, I knew he had someone else. Joseph had told me that he heard from a friend Montana had long since moved on. According to Joseph, she was gorgeous, and perfect. He’d also told me this woman loved Montana in a way that was almost supernatural.

The day I heard my heart broke into a million little pieces. I spent the next few hours drinking, crying and feeling all kinds of jealous feelings for this new woman.

I knew the kind of man Montana was, the kind of lover he was, the way he took care of his woman. It wasn’t a secret he wouldn’t have stayed single for long. Sooner or later, a smarter woman than I had been would come along and snatched him up.

It was my fault I wasn’t that woman. I had the chance to be and I blew it.

I pulled my mind from what could have been and refocused on the present.

There were Canadian assholes coming for me.

As quickly as I could, I checked my purse for the weapon then hurried out to meet Montana at the diner we usually met when my world turned into a giant dumpster fire. It wasn’t a far drive, but I took my time, being careful not to break any traffic laws to avoid getting pulled over.

If nothing else, the cops were probably waiting for a search of my car to see if I was in it when it turned into a fourth of July fire show.

That gave me a little time to get the hell out of dodge.

I sat in the parking
