yours, but they’re not tiny either,” I said before I remembered that I was supposed to be pretending to be sweet.
He blinked, then glanced down at his lap and started laughing. “For the record, they’re not freakishly big or anything like that. Also, how do you know about that?”
“Uh, maybe because everyone used to know about it?” I said, completely deadpan as I tried to keep my own eyes away from his lap. “You should be flattered. Your package is what legends are made of.”
A smirk formed on his lips, humor flickering in his eyes under the low light of our corner. “What I can do with it is what the legends should be made of.”
I batted my eyelashes at him. “Maybe it would’ve been if you’d left anyone with anything to talk about in that context.”
“Maybe I preferred to keep my conquests quiet,” he said. “I’d be happy to prove it to you sometime if you don’t believe me, though.”
My overheated lady parts begged me to take him up on his offer. While we’d been talking, we’d somehow ended up sitting even closer together. One of my legs had slid between his and our thighs were pressed together.
Our arms brushed with almost every move we made, and he was close enough to kiss me if he wanted to. “As tempting as it is to take you up on that, it’s probably not a good idea.”
“Probably not,” he agreed but didn’t pull away. “Tell me about the books you’ve written. What kind of romance are they?”
“You’re familiar with the fact that there are subgenres?” I asked, also choosing to remain close to him for some reason or another.
He arched a blond brow at me. “Do I look like the kind of person who misses things that are obvious?”
“Is it obvious, though? I’d have thought that only readers and writers of the genre know about things like that. Tell me, Dane. Are you a closeted romance reader?”
“Nothing closeted about it. I’ve read plenty in my life and some of it has been classified as romance. I’m not ashamed of it. In fact, I’ve read some great romance. Some of it was hot as fuck, sure, but the stories were great too. I’m definitely not in the camp of people who believe it’s all just smut.”
“You might just be my perfect man,” I said, jumping when I caught a flash of movement at the other end of my table.
My brother dropped into the unoccupied seat across from the bench we were on, a curious frown on his face as he looked between us. “Am I interrupting something?”
“Nah, we were just getting to know each other again,” Dane said, shifting back on the bench before turning toward Rick. “If you’ll excuse me, I still have some work to get done tonight. You’ve both got your room keys and your overnight bags, right?”
“We’re all good,” my brother replied. “Are you sure you can’t stay for another drink? I just got here.”
“I know and I wish I could, but I need to stop by the conference room Jefferson’s using as his office before it gets too late,” he said before glancing back at me. “Think about the offer tonight. We’ll need your answer in the morning.”
Draining the last of his drink, he stood up and scooted out from behind the table. After shaking Rick’s hand and shooting me a final grin, he said goodnight and grabbed his jacket from the rack near the door before taking off.
A waitress appeared as if she’d been summoned. Dane had bought our drinks from the bar, but Rick ordered from her and then settled back on his chair.
“It’s a pity Dane couldn’t stay to have a drink with us,” he said, ruffling his hair as he glanced toward the door. “Do you think it’s weird that he took off like that?”
“He’s working,” I said as if that explained everything. In reality, I wondered if he’d fled because of the flirtation that had been going on between us. God knew I was more affected by it than I should’ve been. “I’m sure he’d have stuck around to rekindle your bromance if he didn’t have work to do.”
Rick pouted but his eyes shone with laughter and he winked at me. “A lot of people would pay good money to see the two of us kindling anything.”
“Firstly, eww.” I wriggled my nose at him. “I don’t need to think about my brother engaged in any of the acts you were just implying,
