Because I Want To - Grace R. Duncan Page 0,48

months. You—and your boyfriend—will probably notice things a little sooner. But only because you’re so familiar with your body.”

Adam refused to blush at the doctor pointing out Matt would know his body. He would, they’d told him Matt was the father, but that didn’t seem to make a difference to Adam’s brain. He managed to shove the thought to the back of his mind.

Dr. Graham pulled a measuring tape out of a drawer next to the exam table, then stretched it over Adam’s abdomen. He made a note in Adam’s chart, then went back into the drawer.

Adam’s heart thumped when he saw what Dr. Graham brought out next. He’d been reading up on the things that happened at the different appointments, and he’d been hoping for this.

“Okay. There’s still a chance we won’t hear it, but let’s try. If the Doppler has power….” He frowned down at the device and pushed a button on the side. He nodded when static came through the speaker. “Ah, good. Okay,” he said as he pulled a small microphone part off the clip holding it to the speaker, then placed it against Adam’s belly.

Adam held his breath, eyes locked on the microphone, but his hand tightened around Matt’s. He glanced up at Matt and saw he was focused on the doctor too, so Adam turned his attention back to the speaker. A moment later, Dr. Graham paused the wand over one small spot, and a whoosh, whoosh sound came through the speaker. Adam’s eyes widened, and he couldn’t stop the smile that spread for anything.

Somehow, that little sound made the baby so real, even more than the morning sickness or exhaustion, though both were very obvious symptoms of his pregnancy. This—the audible evidence of the baby—really brought it home in a way none of the other things had.

He was going to be a parent.

Holy shit.

Matt squeezed his hand then, and Adam looked up to find an expression of wonder mixed with pride on Matt’s face. “Our baby,” he whispered.

Adam’s heart thudded, both at the words and the look on Matt’s face. He couldn’t even begin to think Matt wasn’t happy about their baby—thrilled, delirious—based on that look alone. “Yeah,” Adam managed to whisper in return. He looked up at Dr. Graham, who was smiling at them. “Um… thank you.”

Dr. Graham just nodded. “You’re welcome. I know it’s one of the biggest moments. They’re not even my babies, and I never get tired of hearing it.” He snapped the wand back into the clip and returned the Doppler to the drawer. Then he turned to Adam and Matt. “I’ll get Sara in here to do the blood draw, and then we’ll get you set up for four weeks from now. That’s about when we’ll start looking at doing the first ultrasound too. Okay?” He patted Adam’s leg. “Go ahead and sit up. Make sure you keep eating!”

“I will, doctor. Thank you.”

“Yes, thank you,” Matt added.

With a wave, the doctor stepped out.

“Holy shit,” Matt blurted.

That made Adam laugh. “No kidding. That’s exactly what I was thinking a minute ago.”

“It’s more—”

“Real somehow, yeah.” Adam shook his head. “Wow.”

“Yeah, wow.” Matt leaned in and kissed Adam softly. “So… are you daddy or papa? Or do you want to go with what some omegas do and use mom?”

Adam laughed. “Uh… I think we have a few months to decide that, don’t we?”

Matt shrugged. “True. We have time to decide a lot of things, but why not now?”

Adam tilted his head, considering Matt for a moment. “No reason, I guess. I think I like daddy better. I just don’t see myself going by ‘mom’—do you?”

Matt laughed. “Yeah, there’s nothing mommyish about you.”

“What? I can’t be maternal?”

“I didn’t say that. Was that a trap?”

Adam scowled, then stuck his tongue out.

That just made Matt laugh again. “Anyway, I have no doubt you can be maternal. But you have to admit, even after having our kid, you’re not going to look like a typical mom.”

“I hope not. I really don’t think I’d look good with breasts.”

Matt laughed. “I dunno. Get the right bra—”

“Couch,” was all Adam said.

“Right. So… if you’re Dad, then I am Papa. See? That was easy, wasn’t it?”

“I’m not sure I want to answer that ‘easy’ question.” Adam shook his head. “So… girl or boy?”

“Well… I have to admit, I understand boys way better than I do girls.”

“Yeah, me too. When they can tell, do we want to know?”

Matt looked thoughtful. “I don’t think it would be a bad idea.
