arguing gets worse whenever it’s been a long swim since I’ve mediated their interactions. Without me in the middle to keep the balance, E’s carefree – sometimes mistakenly labeled crazy – style grates Bodhi’s sensible – sometimes accurately labeled anal retentive – ways. They don’t always need someone to remind them less struggle more laughs, but it damn sure never fails to help. Unfortunately, ever since I took Rina’s case, most of the time I would usually spend outside of the water with them has been working on that while the time we’d usually surf or board has been spent between my woman’s legs.

What can I say?

She likes a good O or two to help her start a peaceful workday, and I love being the one who gets to give it to her.

By the time she’s typically out the door and headed to the office with a fresh-blended pineapple smoothie in her hand, they’ve already wrapped up, leaving me to hit the waves that are still left all alone.

Which I honestly don’t hate.

Being one with the water is rejuvenating.

And the deeper I dive into this case, the more revitalization I find myself seeking.

To say her case is a mess would be an ugly understatement. Between the arresting officer switching his story, which resulted in changing the charges from bribery to the solicitation of prostitution, to digging into his background to create an iron clad case that he’s lying, has abused her, his power, and doesn’t just deserve to be fired, but behind bars, I’ve constantly got this wad of uneasiness in the pit of my stomach. The more I read from the private investigator’s findings and other victims’ testimonies, the more determined I find myself unable to rest until this monster is stripped of his authorities and unable to cause this pain and grief on other individuals. For the first time I can remember, a case in my possession doesn’t just feel like work to complete.

It feels like I’ve got a purpose to fulfill.

Finally reaching a stopping point in the water, I lower myself onto my ass and rest my paddle in my lap. The water feels amazing and refreshing as it creeps up my somewhat sore calves that had forgotten how hard this shit was. Brooklyn leans her white, one piece, cut-out swimsuit-covered frame backwards, and I immediately wrap an arm around her.

Protectively.

Possessively.

No matter how much I try to fight it, the instinct to go all barbaric and territorial continuously wins out. It’s like my previously peaceful brain suddenly lacks the capability to be any other way when it comes to her. I’ve gotta be holding her hand or have an arm around her waist or face buried in her pineapple-smelling hair. I’ve gotta kiss her like I’m going off to fight in Aquaman’s war every time she walks out the door and fuck her like I’m fresh out of an underwater prison where the only thing that got me through the days were thoughts of her. Part of me – the more logical part – knows that I’ve gotta let go a bit. Come up for air. Remember that the sun doesn’t rise and set by her. Yet…the other part of me – the follow your vibes ‘cause they never steer you wrong part – says fuck logic. That this shit is normal when you’ve found your soulmate, something that easily explains why I’ve never felt anything like this in my entire life.

“You know sometimes I forget how peaceful shit is out here,” Bodhi thoughtfully states, redirecting our stares his direction. “How it just…shuts down the day-to-day noise, and lets you appreciate all that nature has to offer.” His face angles upwards to the bright blue sky. “You have any idea how lucky we are that Mother Earth gives as she does?”

“Do you have any idea how lucky you are that that dolphin wants to play and not punch you?” E snickers as he splashes water at the creature that’s come out to greet us. “Because I mean if I were him, punching you would be like playing.”

“Dolphin’s don’t punch people,” Bodhi grumbles and joins in on the flicking around of water

“They do headbutt,” Brooklyn cheerfully interjects. “And, in some cases have been known to break bones.”

E’s actions suddenly cease. “Fuck me, should we be more scared than we are?”

All of a sudden, the dolphin we had been playing with dives into the water and uses its tail to soak my best friend with a good-sized splash. The
