crawled into bed alone, closed his eyes, and tried to sleep. Outside, he could hear the whispering of the wind. Hamish.

Chapter Two: Liam

Liam was standing at the counter, making coffee when Hamish came out of the bedroom. “Hey,” Hamish said, coming over to kiss him. “Coffee ready?”

“Just about,” Liam said. “Did you sleep okay?”

“You know me,” Hamish said. “I sleep or I don’t, doesn’t affect me much. And you?”

He shrugged. If one called waking up periodically in a cold sweat sleeping.

“At least you don’t sleep standing up anymore.”

Liam laughed. When he’d first met Hamish, he’d been on a mission from the Dark Lord to bring Liam to the underworld. Hamish had fallen in love with him and saved him. “That was creepy when I saw you sleep standing up in the corner.”

“I wasn’t really sleeping,” Hamish said. “I prefer to sleep beside you now.”

Liam looked over at him. Hamish was so beautiful. He was the sexiest man he’d ever seen and a great lover. Since Yemen, however, their sex life had been practically nonexistent. The anxiety meds didn’t help. It wasn’t because he didn’t want to. In his head, he imagined Hamish touching him, holding him, but the erection just didn’t come, and if it did, he couldn’t hold on to it long enough.

Hamish told him he understood, that he’d be patient. “You’ve been through a lot, baby. You won’t need to take those pills forever.”

“What if I do? What if we can never have sex again, Hamish?”

Liam handed Hamish a cup of coffee now, and they sat together at the kitchen counter, sipping the brew quietly.

“I’m going in to the clinic today,” Liam announced. “Thought I’d take a look at the patient files. You don’t mind?” It was time. He’d start seeing patients in two days.

“No. I’ll finish the unpacking,” Hamish told him. “Do you want to go to dinner tonight? There is a nice restaurant in the village.”

“Sounds good,” Liam said. “What are you going to do here to occupy your time, Hamish?”

“I don’t know yet. I was thinking about growing food.”

Liam laughed. “Okay. A country farmer?”

“Something like that. I’ll figure it out. I don’t want you to worry about it. Did you take your pills?”

“Yes, sir,” Liam told him, saluting. He hated them, but they took the edge off. He got up and rinsed his cup in the sink. “If you need the vehicle, you’ll have to drive me to town and pick me up later.”

“I’d pick you up anytime.” Hamish smirked.

“Flirt,” Liam accused. He gazed over at him. “God, I love you so much.” That was true. He walked over and kissed him deeply.

“That was promising,” Hamish said, releasing him.

“Delicious.” Liam grinned and headed to the bedroom.

“I’ll drive you in case I need the vehicle,” Hamish said, following him down the hallway. “We might want to get another vehicle?”

“Good idea,” Liam said.

“Did you eat?”

“I ate a muffin. I left you one.”

“What about lunch?” Hamish asked as Liam was gathering together his keys and wallet.

“I don’t know yet.”

“I’ll bring you lunch,” Hamish told him, taking off his robe.

Liam paused to admire the view. Hamish had a beautiful body. He wanted to touch him, kiss his broad shoulders, nibble the round, hard cheeks of his ass. When Hamish turned around, Liam’s eyes widened. The scars where his wings exited looked different. “Ah, Hamish?”

Hamish glanced at him over his shoulder. “Yeah, baby?”

Liam swallowed and came closer. He ran a finger over one of the red, ragged slashes. As he did, he pushed with his finger and thumb. It was opening. There was no blood, no sign of feathers yet, but when he lay his hand over the gash, there was a faint vibration.

“What is it?” Hamish sounded panicky. “What’s wrong? Let me see?” He was trying to turn around, look in the mirror.

Liam stood back to let him see. Hamish ran into the bathroom, got a hand mirror, came back out and studied his back in the long mirror on the bedroom wall. He put the mirror down.

“It could be nothing,” Liam said, chewing his bottom lip.

“It’s how it begins.” Hamish sighed. He put down the mirror. “But why now? Why here?”

Liam had no answer. All he could say is, “Let’s not worry until we need to.”

“Okay,” Hamish said, but didn’t look convinced. “I’ll just finish dressing and drive you to town.”

“Thanks. I’ll warm up the SUV.” Liam shrugged into his jacket and walked out onto the porch. He breathed in some fresh mountain air and unlocked the vehicle.
