Adverse Possession (The Anna Albertini Files #3) - Rebecca Zanetti Page 0,60

crazy chicks from Spokane ram your car, which pushes us into an intersection where we’re hit by an innocent guy just driving his car through a green light to meet his grandma for coffee. Then I meet the guy from the car while a nurse sprays antibacterial ointment on the cut above my eye. How does that happen if it isn’t fate?”

“I don’t know. So what’s the problem? You just met the guy. Take it slow.” It was a pretty cool meet-cute.

She shifted her weight. “I kind of have a boyfriend.”

Oh yeah. The boyfriend of the purple condom world. “I forgot about that. Well, which one do you like better?”

“I don’t know. They both have good qualities and are so different from each other.” She rubbed her chin. “I’m sorry to hit you with all of this, but my sisters aren’t talking to me, and most of my friends let my calls go to voice mail after my sister murdered Danny.”

That was sad and unfair. Kelsey hadn’t done anything wrong. “It’s okay. I think people tell their problems to lawyers all the time because of the confidentiality.” I’d be lost without my sisters. “You’re also still seeing Dr. Versaccio, right?”

Kelsey nodded. “Yes. She’s fantastic, but my next appointment is a week away, and since you and I are going to my hearing today, I figured we could chat.”

“Sure,” I said. “What are the plusses of each guy?” I took another drink of my water.

“Well, Teddy is funny and sweet, and I like that he has a stable job as a manager of a bank. He’s also cute with a great body.” She leaned forward, warming to the topic. “And Saber is—”

I coughed and nearly spit out water before rapidly swallowing it. “Saber? James Saber is your boyfriend?”

She flushed. “Yeah. Well, kind of. I didn’t tell you because I figured you’d think it was a bad idea. We’ve been seeing each other since Krissy was arrested. He’s hot, sexy, and dangerous. You get that, right?”

Oh boy, did I get that. “Yeah.” There was no way Kelsey knew that Saber was an ATF agent. Irritation clacked through my skin. He had better not be using her. “He doesn’t have a stable job, does he?”

“No.” Her eyes widened. “In fact, I’m not sure what he does is even legal. The Lordes motorcycle club isn’t known for being within the law, and they’ve been busted for both drug and gun-running in just the last few months, as you know. But he’s just so…hot.”

I frowned. “He seems a lot older than you.”

“I’m twenty-one and he’s twenty-nine. That’s not a big difference,” she countered.

“Yeah, but he seems older than twenty-nine. Like with life experiences.” I couldn’t see Kelsey with him for long. She was too sweet. “How old is Teddy?”

“Twenty-eight,” she said. “But he seems younger than Saber, you know?”

“I definitely know.” This was none of my business, but Kelsey deserved some stability in her life. “I think you should do a pro and con list for both and then think about it. Maybe fate does exist and put Teddy in your path at exactly the right time. Who knows?”

She drew in air. “You’re right. Okay.” She stood. “I’m going to take a walk in the park and think about everything. Should I meet you on the courthouse steps after lunch?”

“Perfect,” I said.

She faltered. “What exactly do I need to do at the preliminary hearing?”

“Nothing. We just sit there and take notes as the prosecution tries to prove there’s enough evidence against you to go to trial. Afterward, I’ll make a motion to dismiss due to lack of evidence. They don’t have to have much, just so you know, so my motion will most likely be denied. It’ll be good to see what evidence Orrin has. He’ll have exhibits and might have a couple of witnesses testify. I can ask questions but probably won’t unless there’s something obvious I need clarified.”

She frowned. “So we don’t cross-examine or do any of that stuff?”

“Yes, but only to clarify their statements and lock them in. I can also fish for information. This isn’t a trial. It’s just an evidentiary hearing, so don’t worry about it. We’re early in this process.” I really did want to see what Orrin thought he had as evidence.

“Okay.” Kelsey turned and opened the door. “See you in a couple of hours.” Then she walked away.

I immediately called Aiden.

“Hey,” he answered.

“Hey. What is Saber doing dating Kelsey Walker?” I asked.

He was quiet for a minute.
