day off.”
“Maybe it just wants you to be productive.” Grinning, Kelly took a sip of coffee. “Nothing good happens if you just spend your morning in bed.”
“When did you become the spokesperson for productivity?” Instead of reaching for the danishes Kelly had stacked on a large plate, Tiffany groaned her way into a standing position and put two slices of bread on the toaster.
“That’s me,” Kelly said, watching as Tiffany buttered her toast. “Anyway, let’s stop with the chit chat. Nathan told me you had dinner at the Rhonelles’ last week. What’s up with that?”
It dawned on Tiffany that she had barely even seen Kelly since that night—no surprise considering her tight schedule these days. Juggling school, work, and tutoring really ate into her social time.
“What do you mean?” Sitting back down with a cup of coffee, Tiffany took a modest bite out of her toast. Instead of doing a repeat of Kelly’s performance, she tried not to speak with her mouth full. “It was bound to happen. Honestly, I was a little surprised by how soon he wanted me to meet his parents, but I’m not complaining. I love him to bits, and—”
“You ‘love him to bits’?” Kelly repeated with a half-full mouth, one eyebrow fully arched. She didn’t sound entirely convinced of Tiffany’s devotion toward Rhys. “Isn’t it a bit early for you to use such lofty words? I mean, love is... well, love.”
“And since when did you start using the word ‘lofty’?” Tiffany threw back, slightly annoyed by her friend’s disbelief. Kelly had Ronun, and their love hadn’t exactly been a slow burn, so why couldn’t she show some support?
Despite her irritation, a slow smile spread across her lips. It was easy. After all, her day was bound to be absolutely incredible... as long as she didn’t screw up her exam.
“What’s that smile for? Anything you wanna share with the class, Ms. Love?”
“As a matter of fact, there is,” Tiffany said, her smile widening until it became a massive grin. She probably shouldn’t be sharing the news with Kelly—at least not before it really happened—but she just couldn’t help herself. After Rhys’s last text, she had been dying to tell someone. She grabbed her phone, ran her thumb across the screen, and went through her message folder.
“I’m waiting...” Kelly took a big bite of her second danish of the morning.
“Rhys is going to propose,” Tiffany announced happily.
Kelly almost choked on her danish. She banged her fist against her sternum twice, crumbs flying from her mouth, and her eyes became so wide, they seemed ready to pop out from their sockets.
“What?”
“He’s going to propose,” Tiffany repeated, feeling more than just a little smug. Kelly probably felt like a fool now, with her doubts about Tiffany’s relationship with Rhys.
“And why do you think that?” Kelly finally managed, clearing her throat and sucking in a deep breath. “Has he told you that?”
“Not exactly,” Tiffany explained, thumbing through her texts until she found the one she was looking for. There weren’t many—in fact, the text thread between them was mostly from her—and so it was fast. She slid her phone across the table toward Kelly. “But read his latest text.”
Kelly grabbed the phone, and with her eyebrows knitted together, started reading Rhys’s text out loud. “Out of town on biz. Back Sat. Let’s talk then. Important.”
“See?” Still grinning, Tiffany folded her arms over her chest in victory. “What else could it be? He’s gonna propose this Saturday!”
Kelly frowned as she handed Tiffany the phone, not the least bit excited for her roommate. “Are you sure about that, Tiff? I mean, there are a lot of ways that message can be interpreted and—”
She was interrupted by the sound of the front door opening and the clatter of suitcases being hauled into the foyer. Shortly after, two familiar voices wafted into the kitchen.
“You’re up?” Aurora appeared in the doorway, a bemused smile on her lips as she stared at her two friends. “Did someone die or something? You two aren’t exactly early risers.”
“I’ll have you know that since Ronun has entered my life, I’ve become a morning person,” Kelly announced, but that just made Aurora laugh, the bright sound of it filling the kitchen.
“Yeah, right.” Aurora rolled her eyes. “That’s probably because you’re up all night. I mean, judging by all the noise you guys make, I’d say Ronun keeps you up til the crack of dawn.”
“You’re one to talk,” Kelly shot back, and the two started laughing in a chorus. Dane appeared
